Nonsense For Hire

Walk Wednesday 7/2/25

July already. This summer is flying.

Speaking of things that fly…

A large replica of an Imperial TIE fighter

My husband and I very much enjoy Star Wars. We’re not picking about it — nearly every Star Wars is fun, for us. So when we saw that there was a big exhibition not too far away from us, we decided to torture our children and go.

They whined through the Star Wars exhibit, but they enjoyed the rest of the time at COSI. (So much so that we’re planning to go back later in the summer and hit the rest of the exhibits that we missed.)

A very large sort of art deco statue of King Neptune holding a trident and pointing to the side. There are several streams of water flowing in front of him.

The Oceans exhibit is very fun water play, with this massive unit of a Neptune. The decor was very Leshp.

A wall that is decorated with one carving of a swirling octopus tentacle.

Here is another absolute unit. This one is bones.

A very large wire model of a human skeleton hangs from the ceiling of the second floor of an open museum.
Two chairs that appear to b e made out of metal gears, wheels, and chains melded together.

K4 really liked these chairs. Aesthetically I think they are baller. I suspect they would uncomfortable to sit on for any length of time.

So we did find some things that they enjoyed. But for Hubband and I, it was all about the Star Wars.

A man with blond hair and a happy smile stands next next to a small droid with an orange top and green and yellow highlights. The droid looks innocent but he is a menace.

Chopper is an absolute menace and although we did not love Rebels, we *love* Chopper.

Many much droids were there.

A collection of different droids from Star Wars, including the torso and head of an unfinished humanoid droid, a red and white droid that looks sort of like a fire hydrant, and a little guy with big ears that is pushing a junk cart.
A tall droid, shiny copper colored, with a leather belt and many hanging pockets. A sign identifies him as Huyang.

Look at this angelic child.

A small green alien with big green ears and pink cheeks and an adorable baby face with big eyes looks up into a very well placed spotlight. He is baby.

Real ones know.

In the background, an iconic droid in blue and white looks at the picture taker. In the foreground is a large humanoid rabbit in a bright orange flight suit. A sign identifies him as Jaxxon.

I was amazed at the size of some of these displays. It was very cool to round a corner and just, you know, see Jabba sitting there. Or a full spaceship.

A very large slug thing is set in an alcove with red light behind it. It has a hookah sort of thing beside it. Its tongue is out.
A young boy faces away from the camera, looking at a large, sleek, white spaceship with a red streak on the side, clearly to make it go faster.

It did cost an extra amount on top of the regular museum admission, but for us it was worth it. Star Wars has been around in my life forever. I remember going to see the first prequel with my high school best friend. In college a bunch of us dressed up to see Attack of the Clones. We looked through early-released picture encyclopedias and so I dressed up as the “want to buy some death sticks” guy, Elan Sleazebaggano, because…of course I did.

(I can’t find the pictures but if I do, I’ll update them here, because my terrible low budget cosplay is NOT to be missed.)

We also played quite a bit of Star Wars RPG in college. I truly do not remember which version – I’m pretty sure the WotC d20 version? Hubband and I ran a game together that was a lot of fun. And Mark, my coauthor, ran a game for my roommates and me that had a twist betrayal that truly broke my heart.

It was twenty years ago and I still haven’t totally forgiven him.

Clearly I got over it enough to write a book about it – a book that is currently on sale on Ingram! If you dislike Amazon, here you go:

A promotion graphic in greens that reads "A new price just for you! This title is on sale through IngramSpark now for $12.99! Scan the QR Code Below or Visit the link in the comments!"

No link in the comments but link here in case you missed it above: https://shop.ingramspark.com/b/084?params=iIIj5fUDjAzy7T4ES5uo1oKWeAJm5IDQ47LOgbLUNk5

Pride month may be over but the queer rep in our book don’t stop! And neither do the faceless monsters who want to rip our heroes out of reality. And neither does the witty banter, the examination of finding yourself as an adult, and the love between our found family.

  1. […] I took a picture from the other side, too, but I liked the jutting triangle flower bed in this one. It is very Star Wars. […]
