Nonsense For Hire

Walk Wednesday 3/19/25

I bought new sneakers for this whole walk thing, so I hope it works out.

(They cost $20, they’re not *good* new shoes, but still.)

Today’s walk was around a pond and wetlands area where my husband teaches. It’s a nice little area with a smooth path and never a ton of people. There was someone ahead of me and someone going the opposite direction from me; we exchanged awkward smiles. There were also two older ladies who, after lapping me three times, finally deigned to give me a small smile. I wasn’t going for speed, Helen – I was taking pictures!

This path has some cool features. It starts with plaques of the planets, each set the (scaled) distance from each other that they are in space.

Once you reach the pond, there are signs that take you through the different ages of the earth. To my deep disappointment, they still don’t have dinosaur statues hiding in the brush by the water.

Have you ever heard of body doubling for ADHD folks? It’s a way to help get tasks done – you have a friend or family member sit with you, and their presence helps you to be productive. I often simulate body doubling through listening to podcasts. (Some of my favorites: The Cryptonaut Podcast, This Paranormal Life, and Restore Austin sermons by Zach Lambert.) Today I was listening to Exploring the Lord of the Rings, which is an incredibly deep dive by a Tolkien scholar into LotR. It’s excellent if you’re into that sort of thing. I’m on episode 88 and there are…hundreds. I have lots of lectures left so expect it to be frequent listening while walking.

Look at this most excellent tree!

Speaking of most excellent things, it appears that preordered copies of The Way We Used to Walk are sneaking their way into mailboxes (almost a week early!). I found this out from this fantastic picture of my youngest niece.

(My husband hastens to add that this is not a children’s book.)

I’ve since heard from a few other people that their copies are arriving. That’s so exciting! Please let us know, and if you want to send pictures from the book in the wild, that would be amazing. This has been such a journey for us and we’re very thankful for everyone who has and is coming along with us.
